Summer, 2009 – Summer, 2011

The mission of the NASA LIFT OFF and East Bay Science Project is to develop a creative teacher exchange in diverse communities that supports improved science content knowledge and ability to carry out science inquiry for teachers and students. We are composed of university faculty, teachers, and public school administrators, and County educators. Our focus is on rigorous and engaging science content aligned with California Science Content Standards. Our programs will create and support a pool of teacher leaders whose scientific and instructional expertise will improve the scientific literacy of both teachers and students. The NASA LIFT OFF and East Bay Science Project is a California Science Project that provides up to twenty high school teachers at East Bay Arts High School, San Leandro High School, Tennyson High School, and San Lorenzo High School with the opportunity to participate in a two year initiative where they will engage with scientists from the California State University, East Bay and scientists from NASA to plan to implement science inquiry in the science fields of Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Earth Science. During summer institutes, teachers work with educators from the Alameda County Office of Education to adapt their science inquiry into science lessons/units that teachers can use with their students when they return to the classroom. Teachers and scientists will also collaborate throughout the year to implement and evaluate the instructional cases. Key goals for the project include:
  • Improve high school teacher science content knowledge through participation in actual science inquiry projects guided by scientists from NASA and California State University, East Bay.
  • Improve high school teachers’ ability to plan and implement high quality science inquiry within their classrooms by adapting the science inquiry they participated in at the Institute. A sample instructional case can be found at the following web site: http://www.sci.csueastbay.edu/~jseitz/liftoff/
  • Build both an online and face to face network of teachers who collaborate in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of science inquiry units within their classrooms throughout the year. This network will also be a cadre of science educator leaders from throughout Alameda County who will engage other teachers in implementing high quality and standards-aligned science inquiry in their schools.
  • Build the capacity of both school and district administrators to sustain and institutionalize effective science inquiry within their schools/districts.
This site will provide an opportunity for all participants in the NASA LIFT OFF Project to share ideas, resources, and instructional cases that they develop and use as a part of the NASA LIFT OFF Project. Some Web sites and descriptions are included below:

NASA Space Station:
This site will take you to up to the minute news about the NASA Space Station. Go to the Top of the page and sign up for the MyNASA list serv and you will receive updates on excitiing NASA activities.

Noyce Teaching Commons:
We will use this site to build a NASA LIFT OFF Commons Web Page where we wil be able to share our work with other teachers and students across nation.

MERLOT:
The Multi-media Educuational Resources for Online Teaching (MERLOT) provides a wealth of resources for teaching and learning in science. We will use and share many resources fromt this great site.

NASA for Educators:
This is NASA's site that supports instructional resources for educators. There are a wealth of great instructional activities that you can find on this site.

Hi Bill,

I don't think I will make it in today. I accidentily left my purse in the car. The car window was smashed during the ngiht and my purse was stolen. I need to take care of several details, policle reoprt, insurance claiim, cancel cards, replace driver's license, new eye glasses, etc. Doesn't look like an appealing list. If you can, please send the agenda for the week so I know what's up.

Congratulations Team!

As you know, we have recently been awarded a very prestigious NASA grant that we are calling NASA LIFT OFF. You can read about the overall vision and direction for this project in the opening page to this Wiki. We would very much like to stay engaged with the needs of our teachers while we share the outstanding oppotunities to work with scientists from NASA , Cal State East Bay, Cal Poly Pomona, and San Jose State University as well as educators from the Alameda County Office of Education. Please see our draft dates for the NASA LIFT OFF Oreintation and Academies below. Please use this discussion thread to share your vision for the project and how you think this project should be organized to support teaching and learning at your school site.

Orientation to NASA Lift Off: Monday, June 29th and Tuesday, June 30th

NASA Lift Off Academy 1: Monday, July 20th – Friday, July 24th

NASA Lift Off Academy 2: Monday, August 10th – Friday, August 14th
